Step 1: The Tangle Tango
First up, grab that rounded tip metal pin comb or brush. It’s time to tackle those tangles and mats. This step is often skipped, but trust me, it’s crucial! Whether your Lhasa is rocking a long coat or a puppy cut, regular combing is a must. Pay extra attention to those tricky spots like behind the ears, the base of the tail, and anywhere your pup loves to scratch or chew.
Pro Tip: Develop a routine! I start with the left rear leg, move to the left side, then the left front leg, and so on. This way, your dog knows what to expect and can relax. And remember, always work in layers, starting at the bottom of the hair shaft and moving up. Your dog will thank you for it!
Step 2: Slicker Brush Shenanigans
Next, it’s time for the slicker brush. This magical tool removes debris and loose hairs trapped in the undercoat. The fine wire bristles are angled to avoid scratching the skin. Use a steady, flat movement to remove unwanted debris and hairs. Just be careful not to flip your wrist at the end of the hair shaft to avoid breakage.
Pro Tip: Don’t use the slicker on large mats until they’ve been broken apart with a comb. Your dog’s coat will look fabulous in no time!
Step 3: The Misty Maneuver
When brushing your long-haired Lhasa Apso, never brush dry hair. Mist the hair with a conditioner or product to keep static at bay and reduce breakage. I love using Crown Royale Magic Touch grooming spray (No 2). It works wonders!
Step 4: Reward Time!
Don’t forget to talk to your dog throughout the grooming process. Tell them what a good boy or girl they are and reward them afterward. When we say “time to get pretty,” our dogs know that relaxation and rewards are coming!
Step 5: Grooming Anywhere, Anytime
You don’t need a fancy setup to groom your dog. It can be done from the sofa while watching a movie, relaxing, or even in your lap when you’re short on time. If done often, this task should only take about 5-10 minutes.
And there you have it, folks! Five simple steps to keep your Lhasa Apso looking fabulous. Remember, grooming is not just about looks; it’s a bonding experience with your furry friend. Happy grooming!
